Colchester Spur / Air Line Trail
Trail from East Hampton to Lebanon, CT
In 1873, the Air Line Railroad was built to provide a shorter route from New York to Boston. In 1877, another route connecting the center of Colchester to the main line was added. However, heavier freights that weren't compatible with the viaducts along the line ultimately caused the Air Line Railroad's decline.
In 1996, Connecticut's DEP proposed to turn the old railways into multipurpose trails. Now the area boasts wide, level paths perfect for cyclists, hikers, joggers, equestrians, and cross-country skiers.
The length of the Colchester Spur from the parking lot to the main Air Line Trail is about 3.4 miles. The course is fairly straight and flat, and the surface alternates between packed gravel and dirt. There is plenty of room for two people to run side by side. The Air Line Trail runs from East Hampton through to Lebanon (23 miles) and features a mix of flat and hilly sections.
When running, be sure to wear bright clothing because hunting is permitted in the surrounding woods.
