The winner and second place finisher in the women’s division of the Lakefront Marathon in Wisconsin have been disqualified for rules violations. Cassie Peller, the fastest finisher, was disqualified for accepting a water bottle from a friend. This elevated Jennifer Goebel to the status of winner, but only briefly. Goebel was disqualified when photos surfaced of her running the race with an iPod. Using an iPod is in violation of USA Track and Field rules.

The rule banning electronic devices has been debated by runners since its inception. The USA Track and Field has relaxed the rule to make enforcement at the discretion of race officials.
